Everything Will Work Out: A Mantra (Repeat as Necessary)

Time. It stretches gloriously before you when you're young. Anything is possible. Then you wake up one day and realize that some decisions have to be made. Some you make yourself, others are made for you. And that vast expanse of time gets subdivided. Family, friends, career, self--all vying for a place on the schedule. You try to set your priorities by planning for a future you can't possibly predict. It may seem there are a few constants--markers to guide your path--but that's just a trick of the light; parallax. They're not moving, you are. And they can disappear, in the space of one breath. You can disappear, too. You can become so lost. You can get spun around until you're dizzy and throw up. You may even get knocked off your feet. But you fight and you rage, and you do not go gently, and just when you think you're done, someone hands you a free ticket. You may not be the same person you were at the beginning--you remember the hurt and the pain and the fear, and you come so close to walking away... Then, like pinpricks of light, you start to remember the thrill and the happiness and the warmth. And you take that ticket--your second chance. Because you're not the same person, you're stronger. And you damn well get in line and ride again. Just fasten that seatbelt--life tends to accelerate without warning.
